Design Story

Designed in collaboration with Juntos Projects, the Mortise collection explores the beauty of construction itself. Simple forms and balanced proportions are combined with open structures and visible joinery, allowing the craftsmanship behind each piece to become part of its visual identity.

The Mortise Rack translates this approach into a long, low storage piece that feels both substantial and visually open. Rather than concealing its structure, the design celebrates the intersections between its solid wood elements, creating rhythm and architectural interest across its length.

Open shelving provides versatile space for books, ceramics, art objects and collected pieces without the visual weight of traditional enclosed storage. At just 32.5 inches high, its horizontal proportions also create a generous surface for artwork, lighting and decorative objects.

Crafted entirely from solid mahogany, the rack is finished in a rich rose brown stain with a protective varnish. Available in 69-inch and expansive 103.5-inch versions, Mortise can function as anything from a low bookcase or display rack to an architectural storage feature spanning a larger wall.

Frequently asked questions

What can I use a low open shelving unit for?

A low open shelving unit can work as a bookcase, display rack, room divider or alternative to a traditional console. The Mortise Rack combines open shelving with a generous upper surface, providing space for books and collected objects below while leaving room for artwork, lamps and decorative pieces above.

Is open shelving a good option for a modern living room?

Open shelving can provide substantial storage while keeping a room feeling lighter than enclosed cabinetry. The Mortise Rack uses an open solid mahogany structure and visible joinery to create storage that feels architectural rather than purely functional, making it particularly well suited to modern, organic contemporary and design-focused interiors.

How can an extra-long shelving unit be used on a large wall?

An extra-long shelving unit can help give scale and purpose to a wide living or dining room wall that might overwhelm smaller furniture. At 103.5 inches long, the larger Mortise Rack creates a strong horizontal anchor with room for books, ceramics, artwork and collected objects, while its 32.5-inch height leaves generous wall space above for large-scale art or a gallery arrangement.
